Avec les bijoux de toute sorte, les bouquets coquets, la riche vaisselle, l'éventail symbolise bien le luxe et le superflu. With every jewel, pretty flowers bouquets, shiny crockery, fans of course symbolise fairly well luxury and superfluous riches
C'est pourquoi l'éventail, sur cette image pieuse qui a appartenu il y a 100 ans à l'une de nos grand-mères, fait clairement partie de ces richesses dont il faut se détacher pour atteindre le royaume des cieux. This devotional image belonged to one of our grandmothers one century ago. The title "Blessed are the poor by spirit... etc" (spirit being translated here by "detachement" ("indifference"). It's obvious: we have to abandon fans (etc.) if we want to reach the Kingdom of heaven.
Et pourtant ! même les fêtes religieuses étaient l'occasion d'offrir des éventails ! And however even religious events were occasions for offering fans ! Avouons-le : en tant que "bons" catholiques, nous nous interrogeons parfois sur notre manque de détachement des biens de ce monde en contemplant nos éventails, et nous nous donnons -un peu- bonne conscience en pensant qu'ici et autrement, nous partageons avec vous cette "richesse" (bien limitée toutefois, rassurez vous !) Nous allons dans les pages suivantes illustrer de manière plus plaisante cet état d'esprit... SUITE Let us confess (!) that as "good" roman catholics, we sometimes criticize our lack of indifference to the goods of this word, when we admire our fans ! We help our conscience to allow that considering that here and by other ways whe share with you these "riches", not very important indeed, (un)-fortunately !
